What Do You Really Want?

What do you really want? Seriously…don’t just say “I want happiness” or “I want to be successful”. Those are pretty vague statements and really won’t get you very far. To get what you want, you need to define what you want.

When you go to the grocery store, sure, you need food but you usually have some specific items in mind, right?
Or let’s say you’re at a restaurant and the waiter asks what you’d like. You don’t say “some food” do you? You need to be specific.

Life is the same way. What are your SPECIFIC goals? You need to have a specific goal in mind. Once this goal is in mind you can actually start going for it instead of randomly meandering through life.

You want another example? Ok! Let’s say you enter a race. Usually (ok, pretty much always) there’s a start and there’s a finish line, right? You know there is a finish line and that is your goal, to get to the finish line.

I think you see my point here. You need to be specific in what you want in life so you know exactly what you’re going for. Simply saying “I want a better job” or “to be healthier” isn’t enough. Those are still very vague and you’ll drive yourself crazy trying to “find the better job” or “get more healthy”.

Change the way you phrase your wants:

  1. “I want a better job” can be rephrased as “I want a job closer to home with a 15% raise”
  2. “I want to be healthier” can be rephrased as “I want to lose 10 pounds” or “I want to run faster”
  3. “I want to travel” can be rephrased as “I want to go to Italy next year”
  4. “I want to go out more” can be rephrased as “I want to meet friends for dinner/drinks every other Thursday”
  5. “I want to be happy” can be rephrased as…well geese…quite a few things. Break this one up into your top 10

Grab a piece of paper. Write down your goals. Look at them. Do you have some vague ones on there? If so, be more specific. Going through this simple exercise will help you figure out exactly what makes you happy and will also help you figure out what you need to do in order to achieve this happiness. You can’t achieve a goal when you don’t have a goal.
